In 2016, Pope Francis decided to beatify the martyr Servant of God Archbishop Teofilius Matulionis, who will thus become the second Beatified of Lithuanian descent, as well as a model to Christians all around the world, recognized by the Catholic Church. He is a person whose strength of character, unwavering respect for the values of faith and morals allow us to rethink the painful experience of the twentieth-century history of Lithuania anew, sensitively, and with pride.
You Are Welcome To Participate In The Beatification
The beatification ceremony of archbishop and martyr Teofilius Matulionis will be held in the Cathedral Square in Vilnius at 2 p.m. on 25 June 2017. We kindly invite groups to register and come not only from inside but from outside Lithuania, too.
On the eve of the beatification, Vilnius Cathedral will be open for prayer for the whole night. Sectors in the Cathedral Square will open at 10 a.m.; the event will begin at 12 a.m. The solemn Holy Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. The ceremony will be conducted by Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. After the Mass, the faithful will be allowed to pray personally, asking for favours, in front of the sarcophagus with Archbishop Teofilius’ relics until 11 p.m.
The bishops of Lithuania invite everyone to come to the beatification and join in prayer, giving thanks to God for Teofilius Matulionis, his life and works of love.
THE CATHEDRAL OF KAIŠIADORYS
It the crypt of the cathedral are the remains of the Servant of God Teofilius Matulionis. Organised groups may register and visit the cathedral and even celebrate the Eucharist if they have a priest among them. For registration or more information please contact the office of the parish:
THE SACRAL MUSEUM OF BIRŠTONAS
The museum is located at the former parish office of Birštonas. From 1956 to 1958 Teofilius Matulionis was living at that same house and secretly consecrated as a bishop Vincentas Sladkevičius in one of the rooms. You are welcome to come and visit this historical monument where a lot of belongings of Teofilius Matulionis are held. The museum has no entrance fee.

THE PATH OF SEVEN SORROWS “PER CRUCEM AD ASTRA” AT GURONYS
The Guronys spiritual center is located in the hometown of cardinal Vincentas Sladkevičius and is being taken care of by the Sisters of the Eucharist Heart of Jesus. The Path of Seven Sorrows reveals how close to Mother Mary was the life of Teofilius Matulionis and how important she was to him. The community of Guronys also offers some prayer programs.
