Personality

In 2016, Pope Francis decided to beatify the martyr Servant of God Archbishop Teofilius Matulionis, who will thus become the second Beatified of Lithuanian descent, as well as a model to Christians all around the world, recognized by the Catholic Church. He is a person whose strength of character, unwavering respect for the values of faith and morals allow us to rethink the painful experience of the twentieth-century history of Lithuania anew, sensitively, and with pride.

Beatification

You Are Welcome To Participate In The Beatification

The beatification ceremony of archbishop and martyr Teofilius Matulionis will be held in the Cathedral Square in Vilnius at 2 p.m. on 25 June 2017. We kindly invite groups to register and come not only from inside but from outside Lithuania, too.

On the eve of the beatification, Vilnius Cathedral will be open for prayer for the whole night. Sectors in the Cathedral Square will open at 10 a.m.; the event will begin at 12 a.m. The solemn Holy Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. The ceremony will be conducted by Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. After the Mass, the faithful will be allowed to pray personally, asking for favours, in front of the sarcophagus with Archbishop Teofilius’ relics until 11 p.m.

The bishops of Lithuania invite everyone to come to the beatification and join in prayer, giving thanks to God for Teofilius Matulionis, his life and works of love.

PRAYER

PRAYER

OUR LORD, FOUNT OF HOLINESS!

You strengthen all who place their trust in You and adhere to Your will. You sustained Bishop Teofilius when, for Your Name, he suffered persecution in prisons and forced labour camps yet steadfastly remained faithful to You. Grant us, that he who once was our shepherd, may now be our saint and our intercessor in heaven. May the graces we confidently seek be granted through the intercession of Bishop Teofilius. Amen.
